For my second artist I chose MC Escher and his woodcut “Portrait of a Man”. I like the swirly patterns he uses and that the portrait is a profile, that seems unusual to me. For my three elements that I chose I picked: Positive/negative shape, Line, texture. This portrait is made up of lines with different thicknesses and shapes that are all black or white. This creates an unusual balance and high contrasted portrait. This unusual shape make the portrait very interesting to look at and creates a rhythm or a sense of movement in the woodcut. The texture that is created by the contrasted lines makes the image twist and turn. There are lines coming out from his head, I wonder if that represents anything or if its just for decoration.
